to a tensile load of 50kN when the extension of the rod is equal to 0.3mm.
5. A steel rod of 20 mm diameter and 3 m long is subjected to an axial pull of 20 kN. Find the stress,
strain and elongation in the bar, if the modulus of elasticity of the material is E = 2 x 105 N/mm2

ELASTIC CONSTANTS & STRAIN ENERGY

1. A steel bar 400mm long, 60mm wide, and 15mm thick is subjected to an axial tension of 100kN.
Calculate the final dimensions and change in volume of the bar. Take E = 2 x 105 N/mm2
and 1/m =
0.3.
2. A steel rod 2 m long and 200 mm diameter is subjected to an axial pull of 45 kN. Find the changes in
length, diameter and volume of the rod. Take E = 2 x 105 N/mm2
and 1/m = 0.3.
3. The young’s modulus for a given material is 1 x 105 N/mm2
and modulus of rigidity is 0.4 x 105
N/mm2
. Find the bulk modulus and the lateral contraction of a round bar of 50 mm diameter and 2.5 m
long when stretched by 2.5 mm.
4. A bar of length 150 mm is 50 mm in diameter. It is subjected to an axial pull of 400kN. The extension
in length and contraction in diameter were found to be 0.25mm and 0.02mm respectively. Determine
the values of elastic constants.
5. A weight of 1400N is dropped onto a collar at the lower end of a vertical bar 3m long and 25mm in
diameter. Calculate the height of drop, if the maximum instantaneous stress produced is not to exceed
120N/mm2
. Take 0.2 x 106 N/mm2
.
6. A wagon weighing 50KN attached to a rope traveling down a slope at speed of 3m/sec. If it’s suddenly
stopped by pulling a rope, what is maximum instantaneous stress and tension induced in the rope due
to stopping? Assume the length and areas of the rope are 150m and 2000mm2 respectively .Take E=1 x
105N/mm2

TORSION & MATERIAL TESTING

1. Explain the construction and working of torsion testing machine with a neat sketch.
2. The shaft running at 180rpm has to transmit 100KW the shaft should not be stressed beyond 60N/mm2
and should not twist more than 10
in a length of 3m select a suitable diameter of shaft. Take N=0.8 x
105N/mm2
.
(Or)
A solid shaft is transmitting 100kW power at 180rpm. If the allowable stress in 60N/mm2
, find the
necessary diameter for the shaft. The shaft is not to twist more than 1° in a length of 3m. Take C =
80kN/mm2
.
3. A solid shaft 20mm diameter transmit 10KW at 1200rpm. Calculate the maximum intensity of shear
stress induced and angle of twist in degree in a length of 1m .if the modulus of rigidity for the shaft
material is 8x104 N/mm2
4. A hollow shaft having inner diameter 0.7 times outer diameter is to replaced by s solid shaft of a same
material is to transmit 500KW at 200 rpm with a permissible shear stress is 80N/mm2
, calculate the
percentage saving in material.
5. A hollow circular shaft of external diameter 75mm and internal diameter 40mm is to transmit power at
a speed of 40rpm if the maximum shear not to be exceed 80N/mm2
calculate the power in KW
transmitted by the shaft.

1. Find the diameter of the wire, diameter of the coil and number of turns of a closely coiled helical
spring of stiffness 20N/mm deflection. The maximum shear stress in the spring metal is not to exceed 80N/mm2 under a load of 600N. The diameter of the coil is to be 10 times the diameter of wire. Take N
=85 KN/mm2
.
2. A closely coiled helical spring made of steel wire 10 mm diameter has 15 coils of 100 mm mean
diameter. Calculate the deflection under an axial load of 200N. What is the stiffness of the spring?
Take C = 9 x 104 N/mm2

3. A close coiled helical spring has the stiffness 40 N/mm. Determine the number of coils when the
diameter of the wire is 10mm and mean coil diameter is 80mm. N = 0.8 x 105 N.mm2

springs each of 18coils will be required to the energy of motion during a compression of 200mm.the

105N/mm2

5. Weight of 150 N is dropped onto a compression spring with 10 coils of 12 mm diameter closely coiled
to a mean diameter of 150mm. if the instantaneous contraction is 140mm, calculate the height of drop.
Take C = 0.8 x 105 N/mm2

6. A water main 1.5 m diameter and 15 mm thick is subjected to an internal pressure of 1.5 N/mm2
.
Calculate the circumferential stress and longitudinal stress induced in the pipe.
7. A cylindrical shell 3 m long, 500 mm diameter is made up of 20 mm thick plate. Find the cylinder is
subjected to internal pressure of 5 N/mm2
. Find the resulting hoop stress, longitudinal stress, change in
